Public Speaking App UX/UI Design

Project type

UX/UI Design

I chose to design an app for users who wanted guidance with public speaking. Since this is a course, I wore all the hats in the UX design roles.

Challenge
Speaking in public is very frightening. It has spiked even higher after the pandemic since social interaction is limited. Users need an easy to use tool to help them overcome their stage fright.

Solution
>Created a mobile application that provides tutorials and saves the completed tutorials and exercises in a users profile. The app also comes with a buddy system that allows other users to practice together.

Questions:
How can we make it engaging for a community?
What can we do to build the confidence for the next generation?
Why it is important to overcome challenge?

Research
I conducted user research and received feedback from users that I incorporated into user personas. \\u00a0One of my user personas, Jim N is an 18 year old high school graduate and part-time worker, who has an upcoming presentation and needs something that he can study on the go to help him get over his nerves.

The researched revealed pain points that Jim N and other users experienced:

• Not a lot of apps or website that is simple and easy to use with video tutorials.
• It costs money to use apps that had tutorials.
• Jim wanted to be able to keep track of what he completed.
• Most users said navigation was hard to understand.

Ideation
In this version, I incorporated the sketch designs to have a user flow that requires a user to create a profile before they can start a tutorial. This will help users keep track of what they completed and what they are currently working on.

Usability Testing
My goal was to figure out if the user flow was easy to follow and if users would encounter any difficulties when completing given tasks in the SpeakoRoo app, such as creating a profile, completing a tutorial, and continuing after completing a tutorial.
We conducted a moderated and unmoderated usability study on May 10-May 11.

Location
United States, remote (5 participants: 2 in person and 3 remote.)

Length
Each session was about 30 minutes, based on lists of prompts.

Insights
Based on the data from the study, I identified three areas that needed to be addressed:

• Some users found the tutorial a little confusing without the description an insight is: users need to have the description visible in the tutorials page and again in the exercise page
• Some users were confused on how to get started an insight is: users need better cues for what steps are required to be start.
• Users suggested to make profile page list completed tutorials an insight is: users need an indication or icons to show completion

Final Iteration and Design
In this revised version, I added the Step Process to SpeakoRoo based on the insights from the usability test to make it easier to understand and navigate. This mockup has visuals, text, images, colors, and interactions to give a better idea of the final design.

Takeaway
While designing the SpeakoRoo app, I learned that taking color contrast not only affects those with a disability, it also affects those without. I had to carefully construct and change colors around to make sure it passed WCAG color contrast.

It gave me a deeper understanding and empathy with users of visual impairments. The usability testing and feedbacks influenced the iterations of the design tremendously.

Even if it was a simple addition of a step process or removing certain elements to make it more visually appealing or easier to understand, those adjustments made the user flow a lot simpler.

I am really grateful for all the help and contribution from all my peers who supported and volunteered to help improve this design process.

Moving forward, I would like to conduct more usability testing to help determine if the pain points of the users experience have been resolved. This would validate if all the updates fully met the goals of the project.
